Tribute To My Dad, Scott Gress

If you don’t believe in heroes, you haven’t met my dad.

He was a leader in the ag industry, a mentor, and a friend…but I was honored to call him my dad. He was the true definition of a Cowboy—the hardest working manaround and capable of putting in endless hours in the ranch to make ends meet—but moreso, he was a humble and kind individual. He always took the time to look you in the eye, listen to what you had to say, and give encouragement or tell you about the one time he tried it a different way … “and it didn’t work so good.”  He was so strong. Though his hands were swollen from years of abuse from bareback riggins, concrete blocks, and fence posts, he had abs of steel into his sixties, and could still outgolf, out slalom waterski, and outwork men half his age.

Mom and Dad made the best team and had the strongest of bonds, instilling values of hard work, honesty, and kindness to animals and others. Whether they were two stepping to a Waylon Jennings cover or processing yearlings, they always spoke to each other with love and respect.  Even when things didn’t go as planned, he never raised his voice or yelled at his help or took it out on the animals.  He was the last to quit, and the first to buy the beer.In his later years, I got to see him become a papa to my three wild little boys.  He always had a kid on his lap and two catching up to him. The way his face would light up when the kids flew through the front door was priceless. Just. Pure. Joy. He had such a zest for life and lived every day to the fullest, pulling calves to the fire just weeks before his cancer caught up with him. He exuded confidence in an August Macrae manner and quoted “It’s not dying I’m talking about, it’s living” until his dying day. Whether it was taking an extra few minutes to pet a good dog, praise a good horse, or tell a good story, he was always present in the moment and happy to be living his dream.  I’m so proud to be raised by such an incredible man and honored he was able to impact my kids and so many young people in his life.  The outpouring of support and kind words from all the people he touched is a true testament to his legacy. He is dearly missed by all.

Celebrating Mamas | Ellensburg Lifestyle Photographer

Capturing motherhood is an essential job….in my book.  I am so sad that I can’t see my amazing clients and photograph my favorite people. I really can’t wait to get back to work.  I love catching up with my mamas, watching their kids grow and laughing and smiling right along with my families.  I make a huge point at every session to capture the mamas.  Mamas alone, moms with their littles, moms with their hubbies….because they are almost always behind the camera at home.  Sometimes the mom life feels pretty unappreciative.  No matter how polite and sweet your kiddos are, sometimes it’s just hard.  The sippy cups in the sink (and under the couch), the diaper changes, these little people that eat a billion times a day, the laundry pile (next to the laundry basket)…..sometimes just get to a person. And now, moms are helping to home school and fetching all. the snacks…..and not getting break they need.   Mom’s are truly unsung heros and I want to sing your praises today.  I see you.  I appreciate you.  You are the world that those little ones revolve around. You are their nurturer, their home, and their comfort. You are everything to them. I hope you know just how special you are.  Wishing all the mamas a very Happy Mother’s Day on Saturday and sharing some of my favorites from this adorable maternity session.  God Bless!

Ready for Blooms | Ellensburg Lifestyle Photographer

Blogging this amazing session from last summer, because COVID-19….what else is there to do on a windy spring day!  I just love all the fresh greenery in these photos, a sweet reminder of what’s to come.  The trees are just starting to bud and the grass is looking greener by the second, so hopefully we’ll see some blooms in the weeks to come.  I’m not going to lie….I dread spring around here.  The 40-50 mph winds that seem to blow for days on end make the green grass and the tulips blooming not as enjoyable.  But Spring is a beautiful reminder that all seasons of life do change.  After the night, comes the day, after the cold of winter, the plants still emerge with a spring.  After this uncertain time where we are all told to stay home, stay inside, and social distance…..spring will come.  We will endure.  Life will go on.  It may not look the same as before, but we are resilient and will push on.  My heart just hurts for those that are missing a milestone moment.  Graduations, weddings, and gatherings that are canceled due to the current pandemic are greatly missed by the ones involved.  Most of us were not meant for homeschooling.  I struggle to get just one of my children through his daily online assignments and I can’t imagine the parents trying to help multiple children during zoom meetings.  I’m so grateful for their teachers, and all their hard work.   I am just amazed and blowed away by all the time and work these teachers are putting into online learning. I’ve become more grateful for the health of my family.  Even though we’ve spent the last 5 years getting every flu/cold the kids bring home from preschool/school, my family and my parents are healthy right now. I’ve also become more grateful for my friends. Your kind and empathetic voices on the other end of the phone are such a blessing.   I’m struggling with many of you and grasping the little things I can control (like snacks and schedules) but so frustrated by the things I can’t.  I’m really ready for some blooms…..Anyway, sending good vibes to all.  Wishing you all health and happiness. Thanks for stopping by, I hope the joyful people and glorious greenery below give you some hope for the blooming spring to come! Stephenson family lifestyle newborn photography by Hailey Haberman in Ellensburg WAStephenson family lifestyle newborn photography by Hailey Haberman in Ellensburg WAStephenson family lifestyle newborn photography by Hailey Haberman in Ellensburg WA
